The Soil Reclamation and Sustainable Land Management Research Department started its activities in the provinces of Khuzestan, Kermanshah, Fars, Tehran and Isfahan in 1967. This research was focused on the Soil and Water Surveys Department of the Soil Science and Fertility Institute.
Following the name change of the Soil and Water Research Institute and the separation of the Soil and Water Surveys section into different research sections, this section continued its activities as the "Department of Land Reclamation and Drainage " in 1984.
In 1997, with regard to the description of its duties and mission, and by delegating part of its duties to other research departments and also creating new duties, it was renamed to "Soil Rehabilitation and Sustainable Land Management".

Research on the reasons and how to form of saline and sodic, gypsum, calcareous, sedimentary lands and wetlands, investigating the effects of saline water consumption, saline and sodic system on lands and crop production, the most appropriate method of exploitation of saline lands, studying the effect of different agricultural management on soil degradation and changing its physical, chemical and biological properties, simulating different types of degradation in different climates of the country in various main agricultural uses and estimating the rate of soil degradation in reduction of land production capacity, the role of tillage operations in the destruction of sloping and arable lands and the introduction of various methods of basic tillage management, are the most important tasks of this department.

The most important research:

[  Research in the fields of sustainable management of problematic soils and waters.

[  Research on soils affected by salinity and contamination of soil and water resources.

[  Soil quality monitoring and soil erosion management in agricultural lands.

Since 2013, in line with the strategic plans of the Soil and Water Research Institute, this section plays a key role in three programs: "Quantitative and qualitative monitoring of agricultural soil and water”, “Management of soil and water in saline conditions" and "Management of soil and water contamination".
