International webinar workshop on "soil salinity management" was held by the Soil and Water Research Institute (SWRI), in collaboration with Ghent University, Belgium.
According to the Public Relations Affairs of the Soil and Water Research Institute, an International Webinar on "Soil Salinity Management" was held on November 18, 2020, with the efforts of the Soil Rehabilitation and Sustainable Land Management Research Department of SWRI and in a comprehensive program for recognizing and managing soil and water in saline conditions and in order to improve knowledge transfer on saline and sodic soil and water conditions.
This webinar was addressed by Dr. Wim Cornelis, Head of Soil Physics group of Department of Environment, Ghent University. In this workshop, he first explained the basic issues of saline and sodic soils and the steps of l monitoring such soils to their management by mentioning practical examples. Physico-chemical issues and restrictions on the penetration and leaching of these soils were discussed in this lecture. In addition, Dr. Wim Cornelis‎ showed some scientific results of how changes in salinity and Sodium adsorption ratio can affect water management (irrigation and leaching). He stated that new tools can be applied for monitoring such soils and the use of hydrological models to manage and reduce water consumption and effective land management performance were underlined.
Finally, practical issues for management including drainage, leaching considering the balance between salts concentration, tillage, and soil remediation using amendments were highlighted.
